August 31 (UPI) — Animal control officers in Arizona recently made a heartwarming discovery when they found a stray dog with a microchip that revealed it had been missing from its family for 12 years.

Maricopa County Animal Care and Control shared the heartwarming story on their Facebook page. They said that one of their officers found an elderly and seemingly despondent dog. After scanning its microchip, they discovered the dog’s name was Minion and immediately contacted his owner.

The owner revealed that Minion had gone missing in 2011 after running out of their backyard, which had been left open by a maintenance worker. With this information, the officer wasted no time in driving the 15-year-old dog back home.

Before opening the kennel, the officer warned the owner about Minion’s old age and reduced mobility. However, as soon as the kennel was opened, Minion recognized his family and wagged his tail in excitement.

While it remains unclear where Minion spent the past 12 years, his reunion emphasizes the importance of microchipping pets for their safety and well-being.
