Arik Gilbert of Nebraska arrested during eligibility wait

Nebraska tight end Arik Gilbert, an exalted five-star recruit awaiting an eligibility ruling from the NCAA, faced an arrest on Tuesday morning for suspicion of burglary, in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Gilbert was detained without any complications while exiting a liquor and vape store carrying a bag, as stated by the Lincoln Police Department.

Authorities received a report of a burglary and arrived at the scene shortly before 2 a.m., discovering the broken glass door of the store. Gilbert, aged 21, was caught with stolen items totaling over $1,600, which included vape products, as per the police statement. The cost of damages resulted in an estimated $650.

Subsequently, he was arrested on a burglary charge, considered a felony in Nebraska, and subsequently taken into custody at the Lancaster County jail.

Nebraska coach Matt Rhule expressed his disappointment and sadness for Gilbert upon receiving news of the arrest, though he remains uncertain about the impact on Gilbert’s future with the team.

“Regarding that matter, I’m not in a position to comment. I’m not well-informed, as I just received the phone call. I won’t make any hasty conclusions,” Rhule stated.

Gilbert, ESPN’s 6th overall recruit in the 2020 class, commenced his career at LSU, where he accumulated 35 receptions for 368 yards during his true freshman year. He initially intended to transfer to Florida but later opted for Georgia.

In 2021, Gilbert faced personal issues and spent minimal time with the Bulldogs, participating in only three games and recording two receptions throughout the season.

In January, he decided to transfer to Nebraska. Since Gilbert has already utilized his one-time transfer exemption, his eligibility for this season depends on obtaining a waiver from the NCAA.

Rhule had hoped for a decision before the upcoming season opener against Minnesota on Thursday. However, he informed the media on Tuesday that Gilbert, who had been working with the scout team, would not be part of the travel party.
