Argentina’s right-wing President-elect, Javier Milei, is set to meet with President Joe Biden’s national security adviser in Washington, according to the White House. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby stated that Milei will meet with White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and other administration officials. However, President Biden will not meet with Milei as he will be traveling to Georgia and then to Colorado.
The Treasury Department announced that Milei’s economic policy advisers will also meet with senior Treasury officials to discuss the incoming administration’s economic policy priorities.
According to Kirby, these meetings are “protocol-driven” and intended to explain Milei’s economic plan, which includes fiscal adjustment, monetary reform, state reform, and deregulation. A Milei spokesperson emphasized that these meetings are not in search of financing.
Milei’s upcoming meetings in Washington were scheduled in order to explain his economic plan. In addition, Milei, who has been compared to former President Donald Trump, was elected earlier this month and is set to be inaugurated on Dec. 10. He and Trump have expressed a desire to meet face-to-face.
During a call with Milei, President Biden congratulated him and discussed the strong relationship between the United States and Argentina on economic issues, regional and multilateral cooperation, as well as shared priorities such as human rights, food security, and clean energy investment.
Milei recently visited New York City before traveling to Washington for talks with International Monetary Fund officials. During his time in New York, Milei met with former President Bill Clinton to discuss the future of Argentina and the region.
Furthermore, Milei’s visit to the burial place of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson in Queens, New York, highlights his deep respect for Judaism, as he has been studying the Torah for years and openly expresses support for Israel. He has even expressed interest in moving Argentina’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
Milei’s unique religious views have attracted attention and he is recognized as a friend of Israel and a scholar of the Torah. His unorthodox approach to religion and strong support for Israel add to the complexity of his character and political beliefs, setting him apart from other world leaders.
