Are you up for the challenge? Do you outsmart weather forecasters? | Mathematics

If you happen to be reading this during your staycation in the UK, there is a high probability that it is currently pouring rain. On the other hand, if you are enjoying a holiday in the Mediterranean, you are likely experiencing uncomfortably hot weather. Are you puzzled by these contrasting weather conditions? Well, here are some intriguing weather puzzles for you to ponder:

1. The Weather Forecast:
Imagine it’s midnight and it’s raining. Will we have sunny weather in exactly 72 hours?

2. Stripy Socks:
Have you ever wondered why wind socks are often striped? These instruments are used to indicate wind direction, but their peculiar striped pattern begs for an explanation.

3. Windy Wendy:
Let’s consider Wendy, who cycled 10 miles in just 30 minutes with the wind behind her. However, when she cycled back against the wind, the trip took her 40 minutes. Can you calculate how long it would take her to cycle the same distance on a windless day?

4. Barometer Brainstorm:
Barometers, instruments commonly used by weather forecasters to measure air pressure, have an interesting backstory. Legend has it that a physics professor once challenged his students to devise an unconventional method of measuring the height of a building using a barometer. While the obvious solution involves measuring pressure at the top and bottom of the building, the professor sought more inventive and imaginative answers. Now it’s your turn to think outside the box: How would you utilize a barometer to measure the height of a tall building?

Feel free to share your creative and outlandish suggestions for question 4 in the comments section below. The more imaginative, the better!

Please refrain from posting spoilers for questions 1, 2, and 3.

Typically, I reveal the answers to my puzzles at 5 PM UK time, which is ten hours after I initially present the questions. However, for today’s trial format, I will be posting the solutions simultaneously. If you can’t resist the urge to find out the answers right away, simply click on the link provided.

Furthermore, I publish a new puzzle every two weeks on Mondays. If you have any great puzzle suggestions, feel free to email me. Additionally, I offer school talks on mathematics and puzzles, both online and in person. If your school is interested, please get in touch with me.
