Attention SUNY students! Grab the opportunity to apply for generous annual scholarships worth $3,000 providedby United University Professions (UUP), the union representing academic and professional faculty at the State University of New York. The UUP College Scholarship Fund is currently accepting applications for the Undergraduate Scholarship, and the deadline is March 1, 2024. Interested students can access the applications on UUP’s website here.
UUP College Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to a maximum of four SUNY undergraduates with outstanding academic performance and a passion for the goals and ideals of the labor movement. To be eligible, applicants must be full-time students enrolled at SUNY state-operated schools and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.75.
Moreover, full-time graduate SUNY students can apply for the William Scheuerman Post Baccalaureate Scholarship. This scholarship, named in honor of former UUP President William Scheuerman, requires applicants to have at least 9 credits and maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.95. Similar to the Undergraduate Scholarship, dedication to the labor movement’s goals and ideals is highly regarded.
For both scholarships, candidates must demonstrate exceptional personal and academic achievements, as well as a strong record of community service. While the scholarships are awarded on a one-time basis, students can apply multiple times, and they are funded by contributions from UUP members and their families.
UUP President Fred Kowal stated, “UUP’s Scholarship Fund is a great example of how UUP provides support to our students who are working toward their degrees. In addition to their academic achievements, the students we honor have made significant contributions in their communities and on their campuses.”
Since the initiation of the scholarship program in 1988, UUP has awarded over 100 scholarships. Notably, three of the undergraduate scholarships are given in honor of former UUP members and their families who generously supported the Scholarship Fund: the late Eugene Link of SUNY Plattsburgh; the late Robert Carter of SUNY Oswego and his wife, Katherine; and the late Gertrude Butera of SUNY Alfred.
