Apple stock experienced a brief surge on Wednesday following a report from Bloomberg News stating that the company is internally developing its own artificial intelligence large language model. It is currently up about 1% in midday trading.

This development indicates that Apple is taking the advancements in AI technology seriously and considering their integration into future products. Rather than using the term “artificial intelligence,” Apple usually prefers the more academic term “machine learning.”

Over the past year, there has been significant interest in large language models, an AI technology capable of generating text or code that resembles human writing.

According to the Bloomberg News report, Apple has an internal AI foundation called Ajax, and a small team of engineers has developed a chatbot known as “Apple GPT.” Access to this chatbot is currently limited within Apple. The report suggests that some Apple employees believe the company is planning a major AI announcement next year.

In addition to large language models, Apple extensively utilizes machine learning in its products, ranging from Siri speech recognition to the Photos app’s ability to identify faces and pets.

In terms of adopting large language models, Apple is relatively late compared to other tech giants. Microsoft has integrated OpenAI’s ChatGPT into its software, Google has integrated Bard into its search engine, Amazon will offer LLMs through AWS, and Meta recently open-sourced a significant LLM project.

On Tuesday, Qualcomm, a competitor to Apple in the smartphone processor market, announced its collaboration with Meta to enable LLMs to function directly on Android devices instead of relying on distant cloud servers.

Apple representatives did not respond to CNBC’s request for comment.
