Another Victim Identified in the Gilgo Beach Murders: Officials Provide Updated Information

Suffolk County officials made an announcement on Friday revealing that they have identified another victim in their investigation into the 11 bodies found on or near Gilgo Beach in New York. During a press conference, Suffolk County District Attorney Raymond A. Tierney disclosed that the remains discovered on Fire Island in 1996 belonged to Karen Vergata, 34. It is uncertain at this time if her death is connected to the killings of the four women known as the “Gilgo Four.”

Karen Vergata’s feet and legs were found on April 20, 1996, on the beaches of Fire Island, while her skull was discovered 15 years later, on April 11, 2011. The district attorney informed Vergata’s family members ahead of the press conference. At the time of her disappearance, she was a sex worker residing in midtown Manhattan.

Rex Heuermann, 59, was recently charged with murder in the killings of three women related to the Gilgo Beach investigation. However, no charges have been filed in Vergata’s case, which is still under investigation. Heuermann faces multiple counts of first-degree and second-degree murder for the deaths of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello. Maureen Brainard-Barnes, a 25-year-old woman who authorities believe was possibly killed by Heuermann, has not yet led to charges against him. These four women have become known as the Gilgo Four. Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Karen Vergata, along with the Gilgo Four, was among the 11 victims whose remains were discovered near the Long Island beach between December 2010 and April 2011. While most of the victims were identified as sex workers, others included an Asian man and a 2-year-old girl.

Following Heuermann’s arrest, his wife filed for divorce and expressed to the New York Post that her family is still in shock. She described the emotional toll it has taken on them, with her son having developmental disabilities and crying himself to sleep at night.
