Another season begins at Saratoga Race Course for Schuylerville

Saratoga Springs is gearing up for an exciting event with three important numbers to remember: 40, 71, and 20.8 million. Starting this Thursday, the 2023 Saratoga racing season will kick off with a post time of 1:10 p.m, lasting for 40 days.

During this season, there will be a total of 71 stakes races offered, taking place on Wednesdays through Sundays and Labor Day. These stakes races hold a combined value of 20.8 million dollars.

The very first of these 71 stakes races will be the Schuylerville Stakes, which is a Grade III race featuring 2-year-old fillies. This race holds immense importance as it sets the stage for future stars in the world of horse racing.

This year, there are eleven juvenile fillies competing in the Schuylerville Stakes, a six-furlong dash with a prize money of $175,000. The top favorite heading into the race is Wine On Tap, owned by MKW Racing and ridden by Saratoga’s riding champion, Irad Ortiz Jr.

Saratoga Secret, the second choice in the morning line at odds of 4-1, also holds strong local connections. Her sire, Arrogate, won Saratoga’s prestigious Grade I Travers race in 2016 and is now in the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame. Saratoga Secret’s owners, BC Stables, LLC, acquired her for $200,000 at last year’s Saratoga Select Yearling Sale.

Butch Reid Jr., the renowned trainer, has high hopes for the Pennsylvania-bred Carmelina. He has brought her all the way from Parx in Bensalem to compete against some of the best horses at Saratoga. Carmelina will be ridden by Jose Ortiz, the Belmont spring meeting riding champion.

Trainer James L. Lawrence II, also known as “Chuck,” is bringing the Pennsylvania-bred Dancing Diana to the Schuylerville Stakes. Lawrence is confident in her abilities and professionalism, and with the guidance of Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez, he hopes for a strong showing.

The full lineup for the Schuylerville Stakes, starting from the rail out, includes Carmelina (Jose Ortiz, 120), Becky’s Joker (Javier Castellano, 118), Union Suit (Manny Franco, 120), Status Seeker (Joel Rosario, 120), Saratoga Secret (Luis Saez, 120), Closing Act (Tyler Gaffalione, 122), Wine On Tap (Irad Ortiz Jr., 120), Kiss for Luck (Kendrick Carmouche, 120), Dancing Diana (John Velazquez, 120), Mila Junes (Jose Gomez, 120), and Sugar Treat (Flavian Prat, 120).

Overall, the 2023 Saratoga racing season promises to be a thrilling and competitive event, showcasing the best talents in the world of horse racing.
