Another Dubious Biden Deal: Praying for Safe Return of Americans Stranded in Iran

The Biden-Obama cohort seems to be falling into the same trap with Iran once again. It’s true that last week, five wrongly imprisoned Americans were transferred from the infamous Evin Prison to house arrest. However, we must question the consequences of this action. The left argues that this could foster better cooperation between the US and Iran and potentially lead to a deal to limit Tehran’s nuclear weapons program. Excuse us if we don’t pop open the champagne just yet.

Let’s start with the fact that this deal requires a payment of $6 billion from frozen Iranian funds, in addition to the release of several Iranians held in the United States. While the money is supposedly intended for humanitarian purposes, it frees up Tehran to allocate other funds towards its destructive terrorist activities and weapons programs. Reports indicate that Biden administration officials have engaged in indirect discussions with Iranian counterparts in Oman multiple times since December.

This agreement also sends a message to potential kidnappers that the US is willing to pay exorbitant amounts to secure the release of hostages. But what about the prospects of greater cooperation and a nuclear deal with Iran? Dream on. Tehran has demonstrated time and time again that it does not keep its promises, rendering talks and signed documents meaningless.

Furthermore, Western forces recently warned shippers to steer clear of Iranian waters to avoid being seized in the Strait of Hormuz. It is clear that Iran continues to engage in destabilizing behaviors, even plotting against Americans on American soil.

So, no, the US should not release any funds, free Iranian prisoners, or lift sanctions until Iran definitively fulfills all its commitments in a verifiable and permanent manner. Let’s not forget that the first half of Biden’s term was marked by a humiliating failed attempt to entice Iran back into Obama’s disastrous nuclear deal. This pursuit inflicted real damage on the US’s relationships with countries like Saudi Arabia and Israel. As a result, Iran now has substantial amounts of enriched uranium and continues to destabilize the region.

It’s worth mentioning that the Obama deal also released over $100 billion in frozen assets, which were subsequently used to purchase weapons that harmed American troops in Iraq. Some argue that Biden’s initial term is reminiscent of Obama’s futile attempt to revive the nuclear deal with Iran.

In light of these circumstances, it is concerning that the US is contemplating placing military personnel on commercial boats in the Strait of Hormuz while issuing warnings to shippers to avoid Iranian waters. Do we honestly expect these individuals to engage in good-faith dealings? Perhaps Biden should have learned from his previous experiences. Promises alone are not sufficient; Iran needs to prove its trustworthiness before receiving any rewards from America.
