July 27 (UPI) — The annual Chincoteague Pony Swim witnessed a remarkable scene as more than 200 ponies gracefully crossed the Assateague Channel to reach Chincoteague Island in Virginia. This long-standing tradition, organized by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, involved a skilled team of “Saltwater Cowboys” guiding the foals from Assateague Island’s wild pony herd across the channel.

Once the equines arrived, they were proudly paraded through the streets until they reached the bustling Carnival Grounds, creating a spectacle for all to enjoy.

The primary purpose of this event is to control the population of the herd by separating and auctioning off foals. The first foal to make it to the shore is crowned either King or Queen Neptune and will be given away in a raffle during the auction. It’s an exciting moment filled with anticipation.

It is worth noting that the esteemed title of Queen Neptune for this year’s swim was awarded to a lovely chestnut-colored filly known as No. 70. A truly deserving recipient!

While some foals are auctioned off for naming rights, certain ones are designated as “buyback” ponies. These ponies are placed back with the wild herd on Assateague Island after the auction concludes.

The funds raised through the auction are allocated by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, with a portion dedicated to providing veterinary care for the pony herd. Additionally, proceeds from the auction of a specially designated pony are donated annually to a local charity, chosen with care.
