Controversial influencer Andrew Tate and his brother, Tristan Tate, have been indicted in Romania on charges of human trafficking, rape, and forming an organized crime group, according to the BBC. If convicted on the human trafficking charges, they could face a prison term of three to 10 years, while the rape charges could result in five to 10 years behind bars, as reported by the Washington Post. Two Romanian female associates are also facing charges. The case will now be reviewed by a judge for 60 days before going to trial. Additional charges including money laundering and trafficking of minors are still possible. In a statement, the Tates’ attorneys acknowledged the predictable indictment but expressed their determination to prove innocence and clear their reputation.

Andrew Tate’s request for release from preventive custody has been denied. The Guardian reports that a Romanian appeals court upheld a previous decision to extend his detention until at least Feb. 27. Handcuffed to his brother Tristan, Tate yelled his innocence to reporters as he entered the courthouse, according to the New York Post. The Tates have been in custody since their arrest in December on suspicion of human trafficking, organized crime, and rape.
In the January extension of their arrest, a judge highlighted “the defendants’ ability to maintain psychological control over their victims through constant acts of violence,” as reported by the BBC. The brothers were represented in their appeal by Tina Glandian, a lawyer whose previous clients include Mike Tyson, Chris Brown, and Ke$ha.
