Anaheim Man Admits Responsibility for Three Attacks

A 33-year-old man entered a guilty plea on Thursday and was promptly given a time-served sentence in jail for committing a hate crime and two other assaults at the primary Anaheim library and a Target store.

Ivory Julian Anderson Jr. assaulted a clerk at the Anaheim Central Library, located at 500 W. Broadway, around 6:15 p.m. on March 3, 2022, as reported by the Anaheim police. Anderson approached the clerk and struck him, causing the victim to fall and hit his head, resulting in loss of consciousness.

The victim informed the police that he accidentally bumped into Anderson and politely said “excuse me,” to which Anderson responded by forcibly bumping into him. Deputy District Attorney William Ha provided this information in court documents.

The police released surveillance footage of the incident to aid in the identification of the suspect, which led to a report of a similar assault at a Target store located at 101 S. Euclid St., approximately two hours prior on the same day.

In the Target store altercation, Anderson shoved a customer near a cash register and proceeded to chase them around the store, according to the police.

On March 12, 2022, at Betsy Ross Park in Anaheim, Anderson punched a man three times in the back of the head and kicked him twice. Ha stated that as the victim walked away, Anderson yelled, “You (expletive) Mexican, you guys think you can do whatever you want.”

Anderson pleaded guilty to felony charges of battery with serious bodily injury and violation of civil rights through violent injury, as well as misdemeanor counts of battery and identity theft.

Orange County Superior Court Judge Fernando Valle accepted Anderson’s plea agreement and sentenced him to 312 days, accounting for the time he has already spent in custody, according to court records. The judge also placed Anderson on two years of formal probation and instructed him to maintain a 100-yard distance from the library.

Anderson had a prior conviction for battery on May 9, 2021, in a Ralphs grocery store in Pasadena. During that incident, he threw scalding water on an employee’s right shoulder. Ha mentioned that the victim believed it was an act of targeted aggression due to her Asian heritage, even though she and Anderson were strangers.

After Anderson attacked the employee with hot water, a witness told the police that he mocked her by sarcastically saying “so sorry” in a derogatory Asian accent, Ha added.
