An Increase in Texas Migrants Seen in Los Angeles

A new group of migrants arrived at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles on Thursday, marking the sixth arrival since June 14th.

The bus, which arrived at approximately 8:50 a.m., was part of a coordinated effort by Mayor Karen Bass’ office, city departments, the county, nonprofit organizations, and faith partners. This plan was put into action earlier this year and has been successfully executed multiple times.

A statement from mayoral spokesman Zach Seidl stated, “When we became aware of the bus yesterday, we activated our plan and worked alongside our partners to ensure a smooth transition for the migrants.”

Upon arrival, the group, consisting of 15 men, eight women, and 13 children, was greeted by city officials, as well as representatives from the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA) and other immigrant-support groups. They were then taken to St. Anthony’s Croatian Church for an orientation.

It is important to note that Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been organizing these shipments of migrants from Brownsville, Texas, to California. Governor Abbott argues that the border region in Texas is overwhelmed by immigrants crossing into the United States from Mexico.

Abbott stated, “Texas’ small border towns remain overwhelmed and overrun by the thousands of people illegally crossing into Texas from Mexico because of President Biden’s refusal to secure the border. Los Angeles is a major city that migrants seek to go to, particularly now that its city leaders have declared it a sanctuary city. Our border communities are bearing the brunt of President Biden’s border crisis, and Texas will continue to provide relief until he takes action to secure the border.”

In June, the Los Angeles City Council passed a motion unanimously to draft a “Sanctuary City” ordinance. This ordinance, once passed, will prohibit the use of any city resources, property, or personnel for federal immigration enforcement.
