An EU court official asserts that nations cannot bypass Ireland to impose stricter regulations on Big Tech.

Google, Meta, and TikTok have secured an important legal victory against attempts by other EU countries to impose stricter liability rules on big tech firms. The case in question concerned Austria’s efforts to make these tech companies more accountable for illegal content posted on their platforms but the EU advocate general, Maciej Szpunar, has found that this would breach information and e-commerce laws. The directive on electronic commerce, he noted, prohibits member states from imposing tougher requirements than those set down by the law in a company’s member state of origin. Although the advocate general’s opinion is not binding, it is expected to be followed by European courts.
