Move aside Hass, there’s a new champion in the guacamole world: the Luna avocado. Developed over 50 years by the University of California-Riverside, the Luna is set to take over supermarket shelves in the US and abroad. With its great flavor, distinctive black rind when ripe, and high postharvest quality, the Luna is a promising contender. The best part? It grows on smaller trees compared to the Hass variety, making it easier to harvest.
However, according to an analysis by the Produce Blue Book, the Luna avocado may face challenges in overthrowing the Hass as the favorite. Richard Smoley emphasizes that taste will be the determining factor, and consumers will decide if the Luna can match the flavor and texture of the Hass. The industry insiders at SoFi report that the Luna tastes similar to the Hass, but with a thicker peel, smoother skin, and slightly less creamy inside.
The Luna avocado is the result of extensive research dating back to the 1950s. It is an improved version of a previous challenger called the Gwen. Co-inventor Mary Lu Arpaia describes the Luna as growing on tall, slender, and upright trees that are easy to harvest without the need for ladders. The Luna also stores and ripens exceptionally well. Arpaia raises concerns about the risks of overreliance on a single avocado variety, as growers have done for decades, in a separate post by UCR.
