An alarming diversion from genuine injustices

New York’s efforts towards “reparations theater” continue relentlessly. Now, the City Council is considering a bill similar to the one recently passed by the Legislature. This bill proposes the establishment of a commission to investigate potential payments to descendants of slaves.

However, this city commission, although it is only advisory, can only contribute to divisive posturing.

When California’s commission demanded $800 billion, even the extremely progressive Governor Gavin Newsom rejected the idea of actually providing any payment.

The entire “debate” surrounding reparations is an ahistorical mockery. Slavery was abolished in New York in 1827, decades before the Civil War fought to end it.

Why should a child of Chinese immigrant parents in New York City, for example, be held morally or financially responsible for the actions of white slaveowners in other states more than a century ago?

All this commission can do is further ignite racial divisions, a favorite pastime of power-hungry progressives, without providing any tangible benefits to black New Yorkers.

What’s worse, the concept of reparations is just part of a broader package of woke nonsense. Another bill aims to dismantle statues and public art related to any historical injustice, however remotely connected.

It appears that anything disliked by the left is swiftly erased from memory. There is no longer any intention to confront the complex and unpleasant truths of history.

What will happen when they attempt, once again, to bring down the statue in Columbus Circle?

There is another demand for a “truth, healing, and reconciliation process” to address the city’s history of slavery. However, this seems to be just another avenue for politically connected “experts” to receive handouts.

How about implementing legislation that focuses on the actual problems affecting black New Yorkers? These include the increasing crime rate that disproportionately affects minorities and the continual failure of public schools in meeting their needs.

Well, that would require progressives to confront their own ideology and the special interests they serve. Instead, they utilize their power to divert attention to abstract grievances. Talk about systemic privilege!
