AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su delivered a keynote address at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada on January 4, 2023.
During the event, Lisa Su mentioned that AMD has identified an opportunity to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) chip specifically catered to the Chinese market in order to comply with U.S. export restrictions. This move follows similar actions taken by rivals Nvidia and Intel.
Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, expressed the importance of the Chinese market and the company’s commitment to adhere to U.S. export controls. She stated that AMD aims to be fully compliant while recognizing the potential demand for AI solutions in China. AMD plans to develop products tailored for Chinese customers seeking AI capabilities.
Accelerator chips, which are crucial for training large datasets in AI applications, are a key focus for AMD.
AMD is preparing to ramp up production of its MI300 chip, positioning it as a competitor to Nvidia’s graphics processing units used in AI training. While Nvidia currently dominates the market, AMD aims to challenge its dominance with its latest chip.
Earlier this year, the U.S. government imposed restrictions on Nvidia, prohibiting the sale of its A100 and H100 chips to China. Nvidia responded by creating a modified version of the H100 chip that complied with export restrictions. Similarly, Intel developed a customized variant of its Gaudi 2 AI chips for the Chinese market.
China remains a lucrative market for U.S. chipmakers, particularly in the field of AI, where there are limited domestic alternatives to Nvidia’s offerings.
AMD’s success in the AI market heavily relies on its MI300 AI chip, as it aims to challenge Nvidia’s dominance. The company expects the chip to fuel significant growth in its data center business throughout the remainder of the year.
Lisa Su projected approximately 50% growth in the second half of the year, compared to the first half, in AMD’s data center business, largely attributed to the introduction of the new AI chip.
