Amazon Games, a division of Amazon.com, has implemented a round of layoffs. According to an email viewed by Reuters on November 13, the company acknowledged the job cuts, citing the need to bolster resources towards areas that show promise for the business’s growth. Vice President of Amazon Games, Christoph Hartmann, explained that a restructuring in April prompted the need to focus on areas with higher potential.
The job cuts at Amazon Games follow a similar move by the digital streaming provider and online retailer which saw jobs eliminated in the streaming music and podcast division. Furthermore, a small number of jobs were also cut in its People Experience and Technology unit.
The games unit, known for offering downloadable versions of video games and other services, is committed to developing and publishing games such as “Blue Protocol” and the free games offered with Prime Gaming. This Prime Gaming benefit forms part of the annual Prime membership package that also includes free shipping and streaming video.
In April, Amazon had also slashed about 100 jobs in the games unit. These restructurings are part of a broader move by Amazon, which has cut more than 27,000 roles over the past year.
Despite the layoffs, Hartmann expressed confidence in the company’s future and reassured that they are actively recruiting for other roles in the division. The email stressed the company’s ongoing commitment to refining its offerings, focusing on areas with the highest potential for business growth.
The head of Amazon Games also appears hopeful for the future and has a strong belief in the division’s potential for growth. The company’s recent growth in a variety of areas certainly adds a positive note.
