Amazon announced on Monday that it will invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic, an artificial intelligence start-up. This move comes as tech giants like Microsoft and Google have already heavily invested in AI research, with Amazon trying to keep up. Anthropic, considered one of the most promising AI start-ups, will have access to Amazon’s data centers, cloud-computing platform, and AI chips.
The deal reflects the race among companies to be at the forefront of AI, a technology that has captured the public’s imagination and has the potential to transform various industries. These tech giants are teaming up with emerging AI start-ups, providing resources and funding to develop new models and applications. For example, Google has also invested in Anthropic, and Microsoft has put $13 billion into OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT.
Amazon’s investment in Anthropic would give it a minority stake in the company. Similar to OpenAI, Anthropic focuses on generative AI, which involves learning from large amounts of data to produce humanlike texts and images. These tools have the potential to automate tasks and reshape the global economy.

The high costs and computing power needed to run AI models make it challenging for smaller companies to remain independent from tech giants with deep pockets. Thus, partnerships like the one between Anthropic and Amazon become mutually beneficial for cloud computing companies and AI start-ups.
A significant portion of the funds raised by Anthropic from Amazon will be reinvested in the company, primarily for renting time on Amazon’s massive clusters of computer servers. Consequently, while Amazon strategically invests in a start-up, it also supports its own profitable cloud computing business, which contributes to over 70% of its profits.
Microsoft first established this type of partnership with OpenAI in 2019, and now, other cloud computing companies like Google and Oracle have made similar arrangements with ambitious AI start-ups.
While Microsoft and Google have launched their own chatbots following OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT, Amazon has taken a different approach. Instead, Amazon has been providing tools for companies and independent developers to build their own chatbots and AI technologies.
In addition to boosting its cloud computing revenues, Amazon’s agreement with Anthropic can enhance its reputation in the field and drive the development of new AI technologies within the company.
“We can enhance many customer experiences, both short-term and long-term, through deeper collaboration,” said Andy Jassy, Amazon’s CEO in a statement.
