The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office has decided not to press charges in relation to a clash between activist Jason Reedy and City Councilman Kevin de León. The incident occurred in December during a period of mounting calls for de León’s resignation from his position. Both parties involved in the scuffle had accused the other of instigating the confrontation.
De León expressed his disappointment with the decision, stating that he was let down by the lack of charges against Reedy. The councilman claimed that Reedy had assaulted a woman on his staff, as well as himself, during a children’s Christmas toy giveaway. De León also alleged that Reedy had stalked multiple women on his staff at his field office on a separate occasion. De León criticized the city attorney for prioritizing politics over public safety and accused them of setting a dangerous precedent by not taking action against Reedy.
In response, Reedy expressed his disappointment with the fact that de León was not charged. However, he stated that he was relieved to not be facing charges himself, as he believed he was the one who was assaulted and attacked.
The altercation took place at Lincoln Park during a community Christmas event. De León was facing pressure to resign due to his involvement in a racially charged conversation that had been recorded and publicly released. Activists, including Reedy, confronted de León at the event and continued their demands for his resignation. As de León walked into a building, the activists followed him. A video of the incident shows de León backed against a wall while Reedy stands in front of him with his arms raised. Reedy appears to bump heads with de León before the councilman grabs him and forces him onto a table.
Both men filed battery reports with the Los Angeles Police Department. The city attorney’s office has not provided a comment on their decision not to pursue charges.
