James Cameron reveals surprising details about the making of his iconic film “Titanic.” As the movie celebrates its 25th anniversary next month, the legendary director shares that casting Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet in the lead roles almost didn’t happen.
In an interview with GQ, Cameron explains that he initially considered other actors for the roles of the star-crossed lovers. He reveals that Gwyneth Paltrow was a potential choice for the character of Rose, while Kate Winslet was seen as too much of a typecast. However, Cameron eventually agreed to meet Winslet and was impressed by her talent, leading to her selection for the role.
Cameron also shares an interesting story about Leonardo DiCaprio’s casting. After a meeting with the actor, during which all the women in the production office unexpectedly showed up, DiCaprio was invited for a screen test with Winslet. This surprised DiCaprio, as he thought it was just another meeting to meet Winslet. However, Cameron insisted on a screen test to assess their chemistry. Despite initially refusing to audition, DiCaprio eventually agreed and went on to deliver an incredible performance in the film.
“Titanic” was released on December 19, 1997, and became a huge success, winning 11 Academy Awards, including Best Director for Cameron. The film solidified the careers of DiCaprio and Winslet as major Hollywood stars.
