June 30 (UPI) — In a true embodiment of the Cajun spirit, a couple who recently relocated from Arizona to Louisiana had an unexpected encounter with an alligator inside their new home, thanks to their vigilant dog.
Don and Jan Schultz, who had recently moved into their residence in New Iberia, were startled awake by their Australian cattle dog, Panda, who growled menacingly.
“Our dog Panda emitted a deep throaty growl, which woke up my wife. She nudged me and said she thought there was an intruder in the house, prompting me to investigate,” shared Don Schultz in an interview with KATC-TV. “That’s when I caught sight of the unmistakable silhouette of an alligator.”
Quickly alerting the authorities, the couple received swift response from Wildlife and Fisheries officers who promptly dealt with the uninvited guest.
“We are tremendously grateful for the Sheriffs and Wildlife and Fisheries officers who expertly handled the removal of the creature from our home,” expressed Jan Schultz. “It’s likely swimming peacefully in a nearby bayou by now.”
Evidently, the 5-foot alligator accessed their house through Panda’s doggy door. As a precautionary measure, the Schultz family has now replaced the doggy door with a new one that can only be opened by Panda’s collar.
“This has truly been an extraordinary encounter, and we feel like we’re truly immersing ourselves in the full Cajun experience,” added Dan Schultz.
