NEW YORK >> Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has provided her endorsement for President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign, signaling Democratic unity within the party. As one of the party’s most liberal members, this endorsement holds significant value.
In a recent interview on the “Pod Save America” podcast, Ocasio-Cortez expressed her support for Biden, acknowledging his achievements despite the inherent limitations. She described the political landscape as having its ups and downs.
Ocasio-Cortez, known as a democratic socialist, has occasionally deviated from Biden and other party leaders. She voted against the debt ceiling deal negotiated by the president in May and was the sole Democratic vote against a spending bill aimed at avoiding a government shutdown.
During the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, she endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders from Vermont. When asked about supporting the incumbent president in 2024, Ocasio-Cortez remained non-committal.
Biden is currently facing nominal primary challenges from self-help author Marianne Williamson and anti-vaccine activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
When specifically asked about her support for Biden, Ocasio-Cortez replied, “I believe, given that field, yes.”
The congresswoman commended Biden for his strong start in the presidency, particularly highlighting the passage of the American Rescue Plan for pandemic relief and the Inflation Reduction Act, a significant legislation focusing on climate and healthcare.
However, Ocasio-Cortez also mentioned areas where she believes improvements could have been made.
