Alastair Stewart’s Remarkable Eloquence Draws Praise in Addressing Vascular Dementia Risk at Charity Event

In a surprising revelation, the 71-year-old former ITV News presenter, who recently retired from regular broadcasting on GB News, shared that he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. Alastair Stewart made this announcement during a show on GB News. Vascular dementia affects approximately 180,000 people in the UK and is caused by damage to the blood cells. It was discovered after a scan showed a series of minor strokes that Stewart had experienced.

Alzheimer’s Research UK has praised Stewart for speaking openly about his condition, as it helps raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding dementia. The head of policy at Alzheimer’s Research UK, Susan Mitchell, emphasized the importance of people discussing their experiences with dementia to foster support and understanding within society.

Stewart’s symptoms initially included feeling “discombobulated” and having difficulties with time perception and everyday tasks like tying shoelaces. Vascular dementia can manifest as slower thinking, problems with processing information and following instructions, as well as memory loss and personality changes. Although there is no specific treatment for vascular dementia, Alzheimer’s Research UK highlights that certain lifestyle changes, such as managing blood pressure and cholesterol, regular exercise, not smoking, and maintaining a healthy diet, can help reduce the risk of developing dementia.

Stewart’s wife, Sally, has also taken on a caregiving role as his condition has progressed. The couple has four children. Alzheimer’s Research UK continues to work towards finding ways to prevent and diagnose vascular dementia through research and development.
