Renowned actor Alan Arkin, who received an Academy Award for his exceptional performance in “Little Miss Sunshine” in 2006 and garnered four Oscar nominations, has passed away at the age of 89.
His sons, Adam and Anthony, confirmed the news of their father’s demise through Arkin’s publicist on Friday, as reported by various media outlets.
In a heartfelt statement, they said, “Our father was an unparalleled force of nature, both as an artist and as a man.”
According to reports, Arkin breathed his last at his residence in Carlsbad earlier this week.
Arkin began his acting journey with the renowned Second City comedy troupe from Chicago and gained recognition through his appearance in “The Russians Are Coming, The Russians Are Coming.” He won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his extraordinary performance in “Little Miss Sunshine.” Notably, there was a span of over 40 years between his first Academy Award nomination for “The Russians Are Coming” in 1966 and his last nomination for “Argo” in 2012. Furthermore, he received a Best Actor nomination for “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” in 1968.
Most recently, Arkin captivated audiences with his role in the popular Netflix comedy series “The Kominsky Method,” starring alongside Michael Douglas. His exceptional work on the show earned him two Emmy nominations.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Arkin moved to Los Angeles at the age of 11 with his family. His parents, who were teachers, faced dismissal during the post-World War II Red Scare due to their affiliation with the Communist Party.
Arkin honed his acting skills through studies at Los Angeles City College, California State University, Los Angeles, and Bennington College in Vermont.
He initially married his classmate Jeremy Yaffe, and together they had two sons, Adam and Matthew. Following their divorce in 1961, Arkin tied the knot with actress-writer Barbara Dana, with whom he had a son named Anthony. Remarkably, all three of Arkin’s sons pursued acting careers, and Adam even starred in the TV series “Chicago Hope.”
