AL scout attempts to diagnose issues plaguing Carlos Rodon

Carlos Rodon and Luis Severino are set to pitch for the Yankees against the Nationals on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Unfortunately, they haven’t performed as the dynamic duo the team had hoped for this season. In fact, their struggles are among the many reasons why the Yankees are currently at the bottom of the AL East.

Severino, who will become a free agent after this season, is looking to regain his form before hitting the open market. His ERA this season is a disappointing 7.98, and he has a 14.18 ERA in his last four appearances. However, the Yankees won’t have to worry about him after 2023.

On the other hand, Rodon, who signed a big contract with the Yankees last winter, has been a major disappointment this season. In fact, he described his performance as “a pile of s–t.” Despite his struggles, scouts believe that his stuff is still decent, but he hasn’t been able to replicate his success from last year. Injuries and adjusting to the new team and expectations may have played a role in his underperformance.

Tuesday’s game will be Rodon’s first start since coming off the injured list due to a left hamstring strain. He has struggled against both right-handed and left-handed batters and has performed poorly at Yankee Stadium and on the road. The main issue has been his four-seam fastball, which was previously a dominant pitch for him. This season, it has been below average with an expected slugging percentage that is well above his previous years.

Rodon has also had trouble with his slider, although some metrics suggest he has been unlucky with that pitch. The hitters seem to be anticipating his strengths and capitalizing on them. Falling behind in counts and relying heavily on his fastball has made him vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Anthony Volpe has been performing well for the Yankees. He homered on Sunday and currently has an OPS of .691, which is the highest it’s been since early July. Since June, he has steadily improved his performance, and he is now showing why he is a highly regarded prospect.

Another exciting prospect in the Yankees organization is Jasson Dominguez. He was named Eastern League Player of the Week after an impressive stretch where he hit 13-for-28 with five doubles and two home runs. Although he had a brief slump, Dominguez has been hitting well at Double-A recently. He is ranked as the organization’s second-best prospect behind Spencer Jones.
