The CEO of an airport is facing backlash after applauding the airport’s punctuality while a nearby screen displayed numerous delayed and canceled arrivals.

During a press conference, Deborah Flint, CEO of the Greater Toronto Airport Authority, praised the improvements made by Pearson International Airport amid the chaotic summer travel season in North America.

As she spoke, a TV cameraman inadvertently filmed flight information display screens that showed a significant number of morning and early afternoon arrivals suffering delays or cancellations.

It is unclear whether these delays were caused by issues within Pearson’s control, such as inclement weather or problems at other airports.

The clip was aired on CTV News, which referred to the incident as an “ironic pan.”

Flint claimed that on-time performance at Pearson had remarkably improved, with nearly 70% of flights arriving and departing on time, compared to only 30% the previous year.

Online reactions to the clip applauded the cameraman for capturing the display, with one Twitter user stating, “Protect this camera operator at all costs!”

Some critics deemed the press conference tone-deaf, questioning the CEO’s judgment.

Pearson International Airport defended both Flint and the airport’s performance on Twitter, explaining that the delayed arrivals were beyond their control, including flights affected by adverse weather conditions.

Representatives from CTV’s parent company, Bell Media, and Pearson International Airport have not yet responded to requests for comment.
