AI chatbot disabled for distributing weight-loss advice, causing concerns over eating disorders

An AI-powered chatbot designed to assist individuals with eating disorders has been removed after it reportedly provided harmful dieting advice. The National Eating Disorder Association (NEDA) introduced the chatbot, named Tessa, and simultaneously announced that it would be laying off all of its human helpline employees. It was taken down after activist Sharon Maxwell claimed that it recommended calorie counting and weight monitoring, both of which were triggers for the development of her eating disorder. Psychologist and eating disorder specialist Alexis Conason verified that Tessa provided harmful advice when she used it herself. NEDA has removed Tessa while it investigates the allegations, stating it is looking into the matter “immediately.”
