After Weeks of Vocal Rest, Sam Smith Makes a Triumphant Return to the Stage

The Montreux Jazz Festival, set along the scenic shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, featured a captivating performance by British singer Sam Smith on its sixth night. This appearance came after Smith had to cancel several UK shows in May due to a vocal cord injury, which halted their Manchester show. Prior to taking the stage at the Swiss festival, Smith spent several days rehearsing at the Montreux Casino, known for its connection to Deep Purple’s iconic song “Smoke on the Water” following a fire that destroyed the building in 1971.

Smith considers the Montreux Jazz Festival a life-changing experience, having first performed there in 2015. This time, Smith made a stylish entrance wearing high platform heels and a golden corset, captivating the audience with an anthemic rendition of their hit song, “Stay With Me,” before delving into their extensive repertoire. The performance also featured a powerful rendition of Smith’s Grammy-winning song “Unholy,” which was written in collaboration with the talented Kim Petras.

As the closing act, Smith ended the set with an energetic dance routine to their new collaborative track, “Vulgar,” with pop icon Madonna. This marked the first time the single was performed as part of their setlist. Reflecting on their experience, Smith expressed gratitude for Montreux Jazz Festival, stating, “My first time here was like eight years ago, I came here on a tour and I had no idea what this festival was. I was 22 years old, and it blew my mind how beautiful this place was. It inspired me so much, learning about all the amazing people that had performed here. So I came back but as a punter… and I had the most amazing time here, two years in a row. I watched so much music and I got drunk on the lake, and it was all so fun. I just want to say to Montreux and all the powers that be, thank you for having me and my friends here again.”

The Montreux Jazz Festival will continue until July 15, showcasing a diverse and enticing lineup that spans various genres and eras. With notable acts such as Wet Leg, Norah Jones, Iggy Pop, Gabriels, Nile Rodgers, and Loyle Carner, attendees can expect an unforgettable musical experience.
