AFN National Chief RoseAnne Archibald Demands Reinstatement Following Removal

RoseAnne Archibald is appealing to her supporters to request their chiefs and councils to reinstate her after being voted out as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. In a Facebook video, Archibald also urged her supporters to ensure that a forensic audit of the national advocacy organization moves forward. She recorded the video statement in her car in a B.C. parking lot. Archibald’s removal as national chief came after a tumultuous year of leadership issues and a human resources investigation regarding complaints filed against her by AFN staff.

Archibald is asking her supporters to contact their chief and council and make two requests: the reinstatement of her as national chief and the initiation of the forensic audit. The vote to oust her, which took place during a special chiefs assembly, received about 70% support from the participants.

The infighting within the organization, which represents over 600 First Nations, became public last July when Archibald attended a gathering in Vancouver despite being temporarily suspended. After chiefs rejected an emergency resolution to affirm her suspension, Archibald expressed her gratitude and alleged that she was unjustly suspended for investigating corruption within the assembly. In her recent video, Archibald reiterated these claims, saying that the pushback she has faced is due to her efforts to fight corruption since October 2020.

Archibald emphasized that her desire for reinstatement is driven by her sacred responsibility rather than personal ego. She stated that the act of voting her out was one of the most violent acts against an Indigenous woman leader. The AFN has announced that the position of national chief will remain vacant until an interim national chief is chosen from the executive committee, with an election scheduled for a special chiefs assembly in December.

Overall, Archibald’s appeal for reinstatement and her call for a forensic audit are efforts to address the issues surrounding her removal and to ensure transparency and accountability within the Assembly of First Nations.
