One such resident is Beverly Henry, a retired senior residing in Toronto whose rent has increased by over $400 in only nine years. Rentals.ca reports that nationally, average rental costs remain above $2,000 a month, with significant increases in larger cities. Organizations urge federal, provincial, and territorial governments to act together in implementing basic minimum protections for renters nationwide. Without federal rent control policies in place, fear and uncertainty remain for many living in rental units. In addition, six provinces have rent control policies, while the rest have regulations in place limiting amounts for rent increases. Governments need to work together to ensure access to affordable, adequate, and secure homes. The Canada Health Act is a standard for reasonable access to health services, without direct charges for treatment. Similarly, a basic standard for reasonable rental access should be implemented. A rental registry would benefit governments and renters, providing accurate information on rentals available in their cities. As Canadians face rising prices, cost of living increases, and housing concerns, affordability challenges must be addressed.
