ADL Ends Feud with Musk, Resumes Advertising on X: Promoting Harmony and Collaboration

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has announced a truce with Elon Musk, the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter. The ADL expressed its appreciation for Musk’s recent statements and actions addressing antisemitism and hate on the platform.

In a statement, the ADL said, “We appreciate X’s stated intent over the last few weeks to address antisemitism and hate on the platform. This has been useful, but more needs to be done. In the spirit of collaboration, we are hopeful that we can continue to engage with X on this important matter.”

The ADL, an organization dedicated to fighting antisemitism and hate speech, was advertising on the platform before the dispute with Musk and plans to resume advertising to spread its message on fighting hate to X and its users.

The ADL has been critical of Musk’s changes to X since he took over the company. They warned in a December report that the reinstatement of banned accounts and changes to the platform’s blue checkmarks were being exploited by extremists. In a May report, they accused the platform of having “inadequate” content moderation policies that allowed the spread of antisemitic content.

The tension between the ADL and Musk escalated last month when Musk accused the organization of trying to kill X and threatened to sue over alleged revenue losses. He claimed that the ADL falsely accused him and the platform of antisemitism and attributed a 60% drop in U.S. advertising revenue to pressure from the ADL.

In response, ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt called Musk’s accusations deeply troubling and warned that they embolden bad actors. However, both the ADL and Musk now seem to be signaling a truce.

The ADL clarified that it fights antisemitism, hate, and extremism across all platforms and expressed its willingness to work constructively with every platform. They also emphasized that Musk’s allegations were false. The ADL stated, “A better, healthier, and safer X would be a win for the world. We’ve said that publicly and repeatedly, and we hope that company leadership shares that goal as well.”

In response, Musk thanked the ADL for clarifying its support for advertising on X and expressed appreciation for the organization’s decision to buy advertising on the platform.
