Adele Makes a Sobriety Announcement
Adele, the 16-time Grammy winner, revealed to her fans at her Vegas residency show on Saturday that she has quit drinking for the past three months. She candidly admitted to being a “borderline alcoholic” during her twenties.
“I stopped drinking maybe like three and a half months ago,” she shared during her Colosseum performance at Caesars Palace. “I mean, I was literally borderline alcoholic for quite a lot of my 20s, but I miss it so much.”
In addition to giving up alcohol, Adele also mentioned cutting out caffeine from her daily routine. She humorously expressed her jealousy towards a fan drinking a whiskey sour during her show.
Adele, who had a memorable drunken night with Lizzo at the Grammy Awards earlier this year, has been open about her struggles with alcohol.
Interestingly, her latest studio album, titled “30,” features a song called “I Drink Wine,” where she sings about relying on alcohol during difficult times.
“When I was a child / Every single thing could blow my mind / Soaking it all up for fun / But now I only soak up wine,” Adele croons in the 2021 release.
In October 2021, the mother of one shared with Vogue that the lockdown period due to the COVID-19 pandemic led her to start drinking earlier each day.
“I’ve always had a very close relationship with alcohol,” she shared with the magazine. “I was always very fascinated by alcohol. It’s what kept my dad from me. So I always wanted to know what was so great about it.”
Adele also acknowledged that drinking made her more susceptible to the media’s opinions and comments about her.
“They descend, and descend, and descend on you, which drives you f–king mad,” she expressed.
It’s worth noting that Adele had previously disclosed that she quit drinking after her divorce from ex-husband Simon Konecki and the passing of her estranged father Mark Evans in May 2021.
“That’s one great way of really sort of getting to know yourself, is just drinking water and being sober as anything,” she shared with Oprah Winfrey.
