Actor Ron Cephas Jones, Famous for “This is Us,” Passes Away at Age 66

Renowned actor Ron Cephas Jones, famous for his role in the hit series “This is Us,” passed away at the age of 66, confirmed a representative.

According to a representative for Jones, as reported by PEOPLE, the actor passed away due to a prolonged pulmonary issue.

The statement further expressed, “Throughout his illustrious career, Ron touched the lives of everyone who had the privilege of knowing him with his warmth, beauty, generosity, kindness, and heart. He began his journey at the iconic Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and his love for the stage resonated throughout his entire career, including his recent Tony-nominated and Drama Desk Award-winning performance in ‘Clyde’s’ on Broadway.”

Jones started his prolific career by gracing numerous theater productions in New York City. Over the years, he captivated audiences both on and off-Broadway, and also made notable appearances in films such as “He Got Game,” “Sweet and Lowdown,” and “Across the Universe.”

In addition, he showcased his talent on television shows including “Low Winter Sun,” “Banshee,” and Marvel’s “Luke Cage.” However, it was his portrayal of William Hull in NBC’s “This is Us” that truly earned him recognition, leading to two Emmy awards and other accolades.

The statement further revealed, “Ron’s inner beauty and soul touched a wide audience through his award-winning performance in ‘This is Us.’ He is survived by his daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones.”

According to the New York Times, Jones had been battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for many years. Despite being advised to undergo a lung transplant, he chose to decline due to the associated risks. It was not until 2017, while filming “This is Us,” that Jones, experiencing a pounding heart and shortness of breath, had to be resuscitated, making him realize the severity of his condition.

In May 2020, Jones underwent a life-saving double-lung transplant. During his recovery at a Los Angeles hospital, his love for performing became his motivation to overcome the challenges.

“As a performer, the stage has been my whole life. The thought of never performing again was more terrifying than death,” Jones expressed in 2021, as reported by The Times.

Jones had a daughter named Jasmine Cephas Jones, who is also an actress and originated two roles in the original Off-Broadway production of the musical “Hamilton.”
