Accused Orange County Judge Charged in Wife’s Killing to Appear for Bail Hearing in LA

Orange County prosecutors are set to request restrictions on the bail of Orange County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Ferguson, who is accused of fatally shooting his wife. The request will be made to a Los Angeles Superior Court judge on Tuesday. Ferguson, 72, was charged with murder last week, along with sentencing enhancements for using a firearm causing death. The arraignment, originally scheduled for September 1st, was moved up to Tuesday so that prosecutors could seek bail restrictions.

The case has been reassigned to Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ricardo Ocampo by Orange County Superior Court Presiding Judge Maria Hernandez.

According to the charges, Ferguson allegedly killed his wife, Sheryl, on August 3rd at their Anaheim Hills home. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer stated that the Attorney General’s Office found no conflict in his agency prosecuting the judge. Ferguson’s attorneys, John Barnett and Paul Meyer, released a statement calling the incident an accident and expressing condolences to the Ferguson family.

Sheryl Ferguson’s brother, Larry Rosen, issued a statement on behalf of the family, thanking everyone for their support and asking for privacy during this difficult time.

Jeffrey Ferguson was arrested by the Anaheim Police Department on August 3rd after officers responded to a shooting at his home. He was later released on $1 million bail. The District Attorney’s Office expressed concerns about a missing .22-caliber rifle registered to Ferguson, as well as multiple other weapons and rounds of ammunition that were seized from his home.

Prosecutors are seeking several bail restrictions, including surrendering Ferguson’s passport, revoking his concealed weapon permit, and prohibiting him from possessing any weapons or ammunition. He will also be required to submit to searches and wear a GPS device for monitoring his movements. Additionally, he will have no contact with his son, except through his attorneys and with his permission, and must refrain from consuming alcohol and visiting establishments that sell or serve alcohol.

The bail motion filed by Deputy District Attorney Christopher Alex alleges that Ferguson shot his wife with a loaded .40 pistol while intoxicated. The shooting occurred after an argument that began at a restaurant near their home.

Jeffrey Ferguson is a former senior prosecutor who became a judge in 2015. His wife, Sheryl, had previously worked for the Santa Barbara and Orange County probation departments.
