- A recent study revealed that AI outperforms radiologists in detecting breast cancer.
- AI achieved error rates similar to those of human radiologists while reducing their workload by 44%.
- This breakthrough could alleviate burnout in the medical field and expedite cancer diagnoses.
Most discussions surrounding AI have a rightfully ominous tone, particularly regarding job replacement.
However, AI has the potential to make positive contributions in sectors like healthcare, where it can aid in medical breakthroughs and expedite diagnoses, ultimately reducing burnout among professionals.
A recent study conducted in Sweden and published in the Lancet Oncology Journal examined this theory and yielded promising results. The study involved screening mammograms with the assistance of AI and comparing the accuracy of AI to that of human radiologists.
40,000 women randomly assigned to AI screenings
The study included over 80,000 women around the age of 54. Over half of them underwent AI-assisted screening, where radiologists interpreted the results with AI support.
The remaining half underwent standard mammogram screenings, with radiologists reading the scans themselves.
AI detected slightly higher rates of cancer with minimal errors
The AI-assisted doctors accurately detected breast cancer in 28% of patients, compared to 25% for doctors without AI. Consequently, AI assistance led to 41 additional cancer diagnoses, including both early-stage and invasive breast cancers.
Furthermore, AI exhibited a similar error rate to that of radiologists, with a false-positive rate of 1.5% in both groups.
AI reduced radiologists’ workload by nearly half
The study concluded that AI significantly reduced the number of screen readings required, resulting in an estimated workload reduction of 44%.
According to a 2022 Medscape survey, radiologists ranked among the medical professionals with the highest burnout rates. Offloading some of their work to AI could potentially lead to earlier diagnoses of one of the deadliest cancers in the US.
