The NFL season took a devastating turn on Tuesday with the announcement that Aaron Rodgers will be out for the rest of the season. The New York Jets quarterback tore his Achilles tendon during Monday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills.
Rodgers, who was in his debut season with the Jets, suffered the injury when he was sacked by Leonard Floyd in the first drive of the game.
Initially, it seemed like a routine sack, but Rodgers struggled to get back up and had to be helped off the field.
Jets head coach Robert Saleh expressed concern for Rodgers, stating, “It’s not good.” He acknowledged the investment Rodgers had made in the team and sent his thoughts and prayers.
An MRI on Tuesday morning confirmed the diagnosis, delivering a major blow to the Jets’ hopes for the season. They had high expectations for Rodgers, who was acquired from the Green Bay Packers, to lead them to the Super Bowl.
Historically, the Jets have struggled with only 14 playoff appearances and one Super Bowl win in their 64-season franchise history.
With Rodgers sidelined, rookie Zach Wilson, the second overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, will take over as the starting quarterback for the Jets.
Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, hasn’t missed a game due to injury since 2017. Unfortunately, his debut with the Jets was cut short after only four plays.
The Jets will have to rely on Wilson to carry them through the season and try to overcome their recent struggles.
Although the injury is a setback, the Jets remain hopeful for a successful future with the talented duo of Rodgers and Wilson.
