A year ago today (June 14, 2022), the trial began for the man accused of killing rapper Nipsey Hussle.

On June 14, 2022, a jury is poised to hear opening statements in the trial of Eric Ronald Holder Jr., who is accused of murdering the rapper Nipsey Hussle outside his clothing store in the Hyde Park area of Los Angeles over three years ago. The twelve-person panel was sworn in on Monday, and six alternate jurors were chosen on Tuesday in case replacements are necessary during the trial.

Holder, now 32, was indicted in May 2019 on charges of murder, possession of a firearm by a felon, attempted murder, and assault with a firearm. The indictment also alleges that Holder personally and intentionally discharged a handgun and inflicted great bodily injury.

According to Deputy District Attorney John McKinney, Holder used two guns on March 31, 2019, after a conversation that included allegations of “snitching.” The discussion involved Asghedom accusing Holder of snitching, which is a serious offense in the gang world. The conversation lasted for about four minutes and was enough to enrage Holder and lead him to return to the parking lot and kill Asghedom.

The rapper suffered 11 gunshot wounds, while two other men named as the victims were injured. Holder, an aspiring rapper himself, was subsequently arrested in Bellflower and has been in jail since then.
