A Step-by-Step Guide to Registering for Threads, Meta’s Innovative Alternative to Twitter

Displayed on a mobile phone screen in front of a computer screen, the logo of Threads catches attention. It is an exciting new app developed by Threads, a text-based Twitter competitor. The official release of Threads is set to take place on Thursday. However, for those who are eager to get a head start, there is a way to access your invitation now.

Meta, the social media giant that owns Instagram and Facebook, decided to debut Threads in response to Twitter temporarily limiting the number of tweets users can read. This move drove users towards alternative apps like Bluesky, which experienced record-high traffic over the weekend. Bluesky is backed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey and is currently in an invite-only beta phase.

Unlike Bluesky, Threads does not seem to have any restrictions on who can use it, besides the requirement of having an Instagram account. Although the app is launching in the U.S. on Thursday, users based in the E.U. will have to wait, according to reports.

If you want to get started with Threads, here’s what you need to do:

1. Open the Instagram app and search for “Threads”

In order to access Threads, open the Instagram app and click on the magnifying glass icon in the bottom left to open the Explore page.

Type the word “Threads” into the search bar, and you will notice a small ticket emoji appearing on the far right.

2. Tap the “Admit One” ticket in the search bar

Click on the “Admit One” ticket, and your Threads invitation will be displayed. The invitation includes your username, the Threads launch date and time, a QR code, a numeric code, and a “Get Threads” button at the bottom of the screen. Clicking on the button will take you to the App Store.

Please note that Threads is currently listed in the App Store but is not available for download yet.

3. Open your profile and tap the three lines

If you don’t see a ticket appearing in the search bar, you can also access the invitation by clicking the three lines on the top right of your profile.

A “Threads” option will be displayed near the top of the drop-down menu. Click on it to view your invite.

As of now, your Threads username appears to be the same as your Instagram username. It is unclear whether it will be possible to change it, but more information will be available once the app officially launches on Thursday.
