A Live Event with Christian Cooper and Amy Tan: Exploring the Joy of Birding

Join us for an engaging live-streamed event on Thursday, June 22, at 1 p.m. Eastern.

Christian Cooper and Amy Tan have both found their way to birding through unique journeys. As a child, Cooper already found solace in birding, long before the Central Park incident that brought him into the national spotlight. For Tan, birding is a recent discovery, serving as an escape from the overwhelming political events taking place.

Birding has become a powerful source of comfort and community for both individuals. In a live discussion on Thursday, June 22, at 1 p.m. Eastern, Cooper, the author of the newly released book “Better Living Through Birding,” and Tan, author of the upcoming book “The Backyard Bird Chronicles,” will explore the transformative power of birding and the unique challenges and rewards they face as people of color in a predominantly white-dominated hobby. Dodai Stewart, a dedicated birding enthusiast and Metro writer for The New York Times, will be hosting the conversation.

Additionally, we will provide information on how you can start birding as part of The New York Times’ summer birding project. Already, thousands of people have signed up to learn more about birds and contribute to scientific data collection during the summer season, when fewer bird observations are typically made. Alan Burdick, an editor on the science desk at The Times, will be joined by Jenna Curtis from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to discuss the importance of gathering this data. Plus, you’ll gain valuable tips from other experienced birders.
