A 1988 Film Rejuvenated by Carol Burnett and Dolly Parton

Kuzui only directed one other feature film, but it gained more attention: “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (1992). With reference to a favorable article in The Atlantic, Kuzui believes that even “Buffy” may undergo a re-evaluation, similar to what she expects for “Tokyo Pop.” She believes that audiences are currently revisiting and appreciating works from the 1980s and ’90s.

Kazu Watanabe, who curated a series on outsider filmmakers in Tokyo, discovered “Tokyo Pop” and found that it still holds up, particularly in small ways. Unlike some films from that era, it resonates with modern sensibilities. Watanabe highlights a scene where the two leads are in bed together, and when the female lead changes her mind about sleeping with him, it is portrayed matter-of-factly, without any exaggerated drama.

IndieCollect’s Schulberg expressed her desire to restore “Tokyo Pop” because it showcases the impressive directorial debut of a woman who she believes never received the recognition and opportunities she deserved.

Burnett, reflecting on the filming of “Tokyo Pop,” recalled Hamilton’s struggles with her hair due to the hair products used in Japan. Burnett humorously mentioned that Hamilton had to resort to wearing scarves and improvising with what she had. Burnett also mentioned that Marlon Brando had seen “Tokyo Pop” and reached out to Hamilton for a potential project, which she declined, as recounted in her book “Carrie and Me” (2013).

While Burnett occasionally searches for her daughter on YouTube and reads the comments, she is delighted that people will have the opportunity to rediscover her daughter after all these years.
