Former President Donald Trump is planning to appeal a ruling that upheld a gag order in connection with his civil fraud trial in New York. New York Judge Arthur Engoron had issued the order after Trump published a disparaging social media post about the judge’s clerk, extending the order to include attorneys in the case.
The appeals court temporarily lifted the order, but eventually rejected Trump’s request to have the gag order lifted. Now, Trump is seeking “urgent review” by New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals, claiming bias on the part of Judge Engoron and the clerk.
In response, Trump’s attorney wrote that without expedited review, “the defendants will continue to suffer irreparable injury daily,” as they are silenced on matters that relate to the appearance of bias during a high-stakes trial.
The case has generated significant controversy and backlash, with allegations of antisemitic threats and disparaging social media posts targeting the judge’s clerk. Despite the challenges, the trial is proceeding with Trump and his co-defendants denying any wrongdoing.
The former president is expected to be re-called as a witness before closing arguments are presented in January. In the meantime, the case continues to draw attention and public interest.
