Variety hosted its annual Hitmakers event on Saturday, celebrating emerging and established talent in the music industry in Los Angeles. The stars behind 2023’s biggest songs, were united by the in-person celebration and carpet.
SZA received the Hitmaker of the Year Award for her single “Kill Bill,” the No. 2 charting single of 2023. The song, “Kill Bill,” was nominated for nine Grammy Awards including “Record of the Year,” “Song of the Year” and “Best R&B Performance.”
Supporting Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour, Sabrina Carpenter received the Rising Stars Award presented by H&M. She recently made headlines with her music video, “Feathers,” shot in a Brooklyn Catholic Church which led to a priest being dismissed from his post. Carpenter’s fifth studio album, “Emails I Can’t Send,” was her highest-charting album released last year.
Billie Eilish and Finneas were honored for their work together on the song “What Was I Made For?,” which played during a particularly impactful moment in this summer’s hit film “Barbie.” Olivia Rodrigo was also in attendance, receiving the Storyteller Award.
Other attendees included Ryan Gosling, Sabrina Carpenter, Maggie Rogers, Boygenius, Victoria Monet, Conan Gray, Julia Michaels, and Michael Stick.
