India and China Opt Out of Renewable Power Pledge, 118 Nations Sign On | Latest India News

DUBAI: India and China were among 118 nations that did not pledge to work towards increasing the global renewable energy generation capacity and energy efficiency at the recent UN climate summit. This stance is in contrast with the global consensus to move away from fossil fuels. Despite rapid advancements in non-fossil energy generation like solar and wind, India remains hesitant to commit to reducing its reliance on coal-fired power plants. A spokesperson mentioned that India’s priority is to elevate millions out of poverty by boosting development, which could be hurt by switching away from coal. It’s important to note that India is still signatory to the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration, demonstrating its intent to contribute to global efforts for greener energy. At the G20 leaders’ summit, it was agreed to triple renewable energy capacity and other low-emission technologies globally by 2030. Despite the lack of immediate commitment, sources suggest India might be part of a similar deal in the future, after proper negotiations.
