Former NFL wide receiver Chad Johnson is among those absolutely amazed by the 49ers’ performance.
The big Thanksgiving win over the Seattle Seahawks at Lumen Field showcased San Francisco’s excellence in all facets of the game, leaving Johnson awestruck. He was also reminded of another talented Bay Area team from the past that seemed too good to be true.
“Forget stats! Forget what the 49ers did today as a whole, and consider their collective talent when everyone is healthy. Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk, Trent Williams, not to mention their solid defense – the 49ers are a formidable force,” Johnson expressed to Shannon Sharpe during the latest “Nightcap with Unc & Ocho” episode.
“This team is almost unfair. It brings to mind the Golden State Warriors when they had Kevin Durant. It was almost unfair, both offensively and defensively,” he added.
After suffering a loss in the 2016 NBA Finals, the Warriors recruited former MVP Durant to pair with superstar Steph Curry, and dominated the next season, securing their second title in three years. The ire of non-Warriors fans was evident due to the team’s seemingly unstoppable dominance.
Johnson draws parallels between the 2023 49ers and those formidable Warriors, with the Super Bowl still eluding the 49ers, despite their remarkable talent. Coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have built a star-studded team around talented young quarterback Brock Purdy, yet they have fallen short each time.
The hope is that this year will be different. Johnson is confident that the 49ers have what it takes to win the Super Bowl.
“The 49ers are a team unlike any other in the NFL. Most teams excel in either offense or defense, but the 49ers are equally strong on both fronts. It’s almost unfair,” Johnson emphasized.
“If they don’t win the Super Bowl this year, then something is wrong.”
