Kentucky residents are being encouraged to evacuate after more than a dozen train cars derailed on Wednesday, leading to a spill of molten sulfur. The train operator, CSX, has reported that the fire has now been extinguished, and the air has been monitored, giving the all-clear for residents to return home safely.
The incident, which took place north of Livingston, involved at least 16 train cars, including molten sulfur cars that had been breached and caught fire. Despite early warnings to evacuate, specialized equipment has been deployed to ensure the air quality is safe for residents to return home. CSX has confirmed that the focus is now on removing the derailed cars and recovering the spilled product, while an investigation into the cause of the incident is still ongoing.
However, the fire resulted in the release of sulfur dioxide, a colorless gas with a strong scent that can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, depending on the level of exposure. Kentucky Emergency Management spokesperson, Jordan Yuodis, reported that 50% of the fire had been contained and residents were being kept away for their safety.
Despite the efforts to mitigate the situation, many families in the area have been displaced for Thanksgiving, drawing concern from state officials. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency in response to the derailment and ensured the activation of the state’s Emergency Operations Center to provide support and resources.
The derailment has caused disruption to local roads, with US 25 being shut down in both directions. According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet for District 8, the affected area will remain closed, and it is uncertain when it will reopen.
