Thanksgiving Celebrations in the United States Amid Tensions in Gaza Conflict

Meanwhile, New York Mayor Eric Adams prepared for possible protests during the parade, asserting the city’s commitment to free speech while vowing to prevent any disruptions.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators briefly interrupted the parade by lining up on Sixth Avenue with banners and slogans advocating for Palestine. Following this incident, officers swiftly led the protesters away. Thanksgiving Day, a holiday established in 1863 by President Abraham Lincoln during the American Civil War, holds historical significance for giving thanks and seeking unity.

As Americans prepare for the holiday season, they reflect on the origins of Thanksgiving, which are rooted in the autumn harvest shared by the Pilgrims and the native Wampanoag people. However, for many Native Americans, Thanksgiving serves as a reminder of the dark history of genocide that followed the settlers’ arrival.
