On November 21, new information continues to surface following a mass shooting at a Beavercreek Walmart that wounded four people before the gunman died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.
As Beavercreek police and federal agents carry on with their investigation, we are actively seeking more details and will provide updates as the story progresses.
Here’s what we currently know about the shooting:
What unfolded?
At 8:35 p.m. on Monday, an armed individual entered the Walmart located at 3360 Pentagon Blvd. and initiated gunfire, revealed Beavercreek police Capt. Scott Molnar during a media briefing Monday night.
He injured four individuals who were then taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The shooter passed away from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, as stated by Molnar.
Officers from various law enforcement agencies responded, along with the Greene County Coroner’s Office.
A Walmart employee shared that they heard at least two shots but did not witness anyone getting hit.
“Initially, I thought it was glass breaking. I then heard a couple of people running and screaming, so I rushed outside and we all went to the Burger King parking lot,” the worker recounted.
Anna Cowley and Kailie Conley, students at Wright State University, reported sighting between 30 and 40 police cruisers with lights and sirens rushing to the store.
The store is currently closed until further notice.
“We’re deeply saddened by what transpired at our Beavercreek, Ohio, store,” Walmart expressed in a statement. “This is an ongoing situation, and we are in close cooperation with the authorities at the scene.”
Condition of the victims?
According to police, four adults sustained injuries from the shooting. Three are in critical condition, while the fourth has non-life-threatening injuries.
Police mentioned that three women and one man were wounded.
A CareFlight medical helicopter left the scene just before 10 p.m. for Miami Valley Hospital, and the other three patients were transported to Soin Medical Center—Kettering Health in Beavercreek.
A spokeswoman from Kettering Health revealed on Tuesday morning that she did not have any information on the condition of the three individuals taken to Soin, or if they had been transferred to another hospital.
Who is the perpetrator?
As of Tuesday morning, the identity of the shooter has not been disclosed.
One witness posted on social media and described the shooter as a tall young white male carrying a rifle. The eyewitness reported that he walked past her before opening fire.
What comes next?
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting Beavercreek police with the ongoing investigation.
No details about a potential motive or if the gunman was previously known to law enforcement before the shooting have been released.
Beavercreek police are scheduled to hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon to provide further details.
Previous incidents at Walmart
The Beavercreek Walmart had a temporary closure on November 6 after a 15-year-old boy reportedly set a fire inside the store. Flames were observed in the craft section with smoke spreading throughout.
An automatic sprinkler system contained the fire, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
The store reopened on November 8, the same day the suspect was arrested. The teen now faces charges of aggravated arson, vandalism, and inducing panic, according to authorities.
Notably, this Walmart branch was also the site where a police officer fatally shot 22-year-old John Crawford III of Fairfield on August 5, 2014.
A 911 caller reported that Crawford—while talking on a cellphone and holding a pellet gun for sale at the store—was pointing a weapon at shoppers and making threats.
