Why Giving Thanks is Essential to Human Evolution and Everyday Life

New York (AP) — Discoveries show that gratitude is deeply rooted in the human experience. Researchers have uncovered evidence that this profound feeling played a vital role in uniting and sustaining our ancestors over centuries.

Gratitude continues to shape the nature of human connections today as well as our species as a whole. “This is something that is part of our human DNA,” said psychologist Sarah Schnitker, referring to gratitude as a bonding agent.

The Roots of Gratitude

Humans, as social animals, have endured by nurturing relationships and working together. “If you like me and do nice things for me, then I like you and do nice things for you,” described developmental psychologist Michael Tomasello from Duke University.

Studies on capuchin monkeys and chimpanzees conducted by animal behavior researcher Malini Suchak revealed that primates reciprocate help more readily if they were previously assisted. The feeling of gratitude may have evolved to sustain these helping tendencies through reciprocal interactions on a primal level. It can be seen across species, indicating it was a fundamental trait among early humans.

Staying Grateful

Gratitude has been found in human genes and brains, tied to social bonding, rewarding feelings, and empathy. “It didn’t just pop out of nowhere when humans evolved,” said Suchak, emphasizing that gratitude has deep roots in the human lineage.

Even toddlers as young as 2 and 3 exhibit a desire to return favors, according to moral development expert Amrisha Vaish, while older children express a tendency to “pay it forward.” A study noted that such experiences result in children sharing rewards with others, showcasing the selfless aspect of gratitude.

Giving thanks may encourage greater generosity and altruism, as evidenced by numerous studies. In fact, individuals who express gratitude display better mental health and brain function even after a prolonged period.

Emphasizing the recognition of the giver, not just the gift, gratitude can deepen relationships and enhance empathy. Therefore, it’s important to express gratitude towards those who have positively impacted our lives, rather than simply enumerating material possessions.
