Arrest in UK in Death of Minnesota Hockey Player Adam Johnson
Authorities in the United Kingdom have announced that they have made an arrest in the case of Adam Johnson, a 29-year-old hockey player from Hibbing, Minnesota. While the identity of the suspect has not been confirmed, it is believed that hockey player Matt Petgrave was the skater responsible for the blade injury that led to Johnson’s death during a game last month.
The South Yorkshire police later released an update, stating that the suspect has been released on bail. Petgrave, 31, has been a member of the Sheffield Steelers for two seasons, a professional hockey team located in Sheffield, England. He was applauded during the team’s game against the Coventry Blaze, with videos on social media showing a standing ovation for him.
After the incident, Johnson’s teammate, Westin Michaud, took to social media to defend Petgrave, stating that his actions were unintentional and that the hate being directed at him is unwarranted.
Petgrave, originally from Toronto, Ontario, has played in various leagues including USports, the East Coast Hockey League in New Jersey, and the American Hockey League. He was undrafted and joined the Ontario Hockey League in 2009.
